SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS WISDOM OF THE AGES for Windows will work with any IBM or compatible PC running Windows 3.1 or Win 95 with a VGA graphics card and hard disk drive with about 6.6 megabytes of free disk space. (An extra 1.5 megabytes is temporarily needed for installation.) B. INSTALLATION OVERVIEW FOR A BBS DOWNLOAD Before you can use WISDOM OF THE AGES for Windows you have to run the SETUP program from Window's Program Manager so it will work properly on your computer. YOU CANNOT JUST COPY THE UNZIPPED FILES TO A DIRECTORY ON YOUR HARD DISK. WIS_PAK.EXE is a self extracting archive. The SETUP program will expand it; put files in their correct places; and optionally create a Windows Program Group. C. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Although the program can be installed to any Target Directory on any Hard Disk Drive, the instructions below assume that you are using the default values of: Hard Disk Drive: C: Source Directory: \DOWNLOAD (Where the UnZipped Files are Located.) Target Directory \WISDOM25 If you use different values modify the instructions accordingly. We suggest that you Move WISWIN25.ZIP to a floppy disk and save it as your backup copy before proceeding. 1. The installation process is started by running SETUP. Since SETUP is a Windows application, you must start Windows (if you haven't already done so), then Windows 3.1 Users - select Files|Run from Program Manager's menu. Windows 95 Users - select Start|Run. In the provided text box type C:\DOWNLOAD\SETUP and click <OK>.* (* Where "DOWNLOAD" is the name of the directory containing the UnZipped files from files from WISWIN25.ZIP.) 2. SETUP assumes you will install to C:\WISDOM25. You will be given the opportunity to change this assumption. SETUP will also ask your permission to create a WISDOM Program Group and populate it with group files. Unless you'd prefer to do this yourself, we'd suggest you answer "Yes." ** 3. The entire SETUP procedure takes about four minutes. Much of that time will be spent unpacking compressed files. When SETUP is done, there will be about a six second delay when nothing seems to be happening, and then WISDOM OF THE AGES will start to run. 4. After the program has run, you can delete all the WISWIN files NOT in the target directory, such as WISWIN25.ZIP and WIS_PAK.EXE. ** Please wait three seconds before answering "Yes." This dialog will briefly flash on the screen before the files have been unpacked - Windows 95 users will hear a sound when this happens. Some 386 owners, with quick reflexes, have managed to answer "Yes" before the files have been unpacked. HINTS AND TIPS When you start WISDOM OF THE AGES, the first screen that will appear is the Quick Start Menu dialog. Select the "Memo" pushbutton. You'll see it in the lower right hand corner of the dialog. It has the caption "Hints and Tips." It'll put you into the help system and give you a brief summary of useful program information. ---------------------- Quote-A-Day is an optional feature that enables you to start every Windows session with an inspirational quote. Here's how it works: Windows has a StartUp group. Each time Windows starts it will automatically run the program(s) in its StartUp group. We've added a command switch, "D" for Daily, to WISDOM that takes advantage of this feature. When you start WISDOM with the D command switch, all the opening screens are bypassed. Your quote, selected by Quote-A-Day, will be the first thing you see. When you're done reading it, you can select the Exit command to immediately end the program or you can take some other action. All you have to do to activate this feature is copy the program icon to your StartUp group, and then add the D command switch to the Program Item Properties' Command Line as follows: Change: C:\WISDOM25\WIS To: C:\WISDOM25\WIS D Detailed instructions for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 follow. ----------------------- A. Windows 3.1 1. From Program Manager's Main Menu select Window | Wisdom of the Ages. 2. From Program Manager's Main Menu select Window | StartUp. (Both groups should now be open on your Desktop. You may want to move one group so you can see both of them.) 3. Press and hold down <CTRL> while you drag the Wisdom icon from the Wisdom of the Ages window to the StartUp window. (Notice how the mouse pointer becomes a replica of the Wisdom icon.) 4. When the Wisdom icon is in the StartUp group window release both the mouse button and the <CTRL> key. 5. From Program Manager's Main Menu select File | Properties and the Program Item Properties dialog appears. 6. Press the <TAB> key once to move to the "Command Line." 7. Press the <END> key once to move to the end of the "Command Line." 8. Press the <SpaceBar> once and then type the letter D. 9. Click the OK button. Quote-A-Day should now be enabled. It'll take effect the very next time you start Windows. ----------------------- B. Windows 95 1. Click the Start button, and then point to Settings. 2. Click Taskbar, and then click the Start Menu Programs tab. 3. Click Add, and then click Browse. 4. Type C:\WISDOM25\WIS D in the Command Line text box. 5. Click Next, and then double-click the StartUp folder. 6. Type the name that you want to see on the StartUp menu, and then click Finish. 7. Click the Close Button of the Taskbar Properties Menu. Quote-A-Day should now be enabled.
